What it Really Means to “Pray Without Ceasing”

encouragement lifestyle

Does the concept of praying without ceasing sound ideal, but the practical application of it feel unattainable? Paul outlines for us in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 not just the suggestion, but the Will of the Lord is that we are continuously not just in prayer, but also in a heart posture of gratitude,

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Conversation

We must understand that ultimately, prayer is a conversation. Just as there are various types of conversation, there are different types of prayer. Formal prayer with knees bent, hands folded, eyes closed, and a still, reverent focus is the most ideal, but it is not the sole form of communication with God. There is also the prayer that is within one’s head and heart, just as there is a type of conversation rolling about in the mind through thoughts. This is where prayer can become a constant, through making the intention of free thoughts not be an echo chamber between you and your conscience, but instead, between you and the Lord. It becomes part of your life’s rhythm; the habit of seeking God’s two cents on something becomes your automatic response, second-nature adialeiptōs.  Adialeiptōs, the Greek word used in verse seventeen for ceaseless offers the wider concept of operating, “without intermission, incessantly, without ceasing.” (Blue Letter Bible). Rather than relying on your own understanding, there is the inclusion of God in this space often reserved for you and you alone. The surrendered mind seeks its redemption and renewal through Christ (Romans 12:2), and through submitted practice of inviting Him into the mind, there is a recurring awareness of His presence in your life. Charles Stanley phrases it as, “Ceaseless prayer will help you discover the Lord to be the constant companion He already is.” We must take to our core that God is interested in everything about you, every facet of your life. It is not that we deserve this mercy and grace; rather, He sincerely desires a relationship with you.

Language of the Heart

Just as we are speaking to God in prayer, we must be expectant for a response. A response from the Lord can be in the still, small voice we are taught to listen for, but it can also be in the form of the unique language of your heart. Romans 8:26 assures us that He understands what we cannot put into words,

“Now in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words” Romans 8:26

Just as He can understand the feelings we cannot articulate into words, He can extend to us answers that resonate to our innermost being. This is not to fall prey to the belief that everything in life is a sign or answer from Him, but it is to align yourself with God.  Ask Him to truly attune your heart to His so that you can begin to identify how He speaks to you, recognizing His voice in your own life. This enables you to stand in confidence and conviction, assured of when He is speaking.

Identify Distractions or Deterrents

In making ceaseless prayer a common practice of life, it is imperative to be watchful to identify distractions and places that attempt to rip your attention away.  Consecrating your mind to be set on what is right, pure, good, and commendable (Philippians 4:8) enables it to be a holy space set apart for communion with the Lord, but it also requires you to be alert. When you are keenly aware of what is entering your mind through environment, media consumption, or influence, it is there that you can begin to identify the little foxes that ruin the vineyard (Song of Solomon 2:15). When these foxes are noticed, bring them to the Lord, capturing every thought that they may be made obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). A committed mind is a sacred place for communion with the Lord.

Put it into Practice

When your free thoughts become prayers, Jesus has access to speak more frequently. This is not a habit that develops overnight, but when it is purposely cultivated as a lifestyle, the result is a deeper, more intimate relationship with the Lord. It challenges us to offer not just the needs or wants of this life, but all things before Him. From the massive decisions to be made to the musings of our daily lives, ceaseless prayer invites Him into every and all parts of existence. This is a vital aspect of putting on your “new self” as Colossians 3:1-4 suggests,

“Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.Set your minds on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.” Colossians 3:1-4

Everything changes in your life when Christ fully becomes your life.
